Why Biennial?

Established in 1990, Turkish Ceramic Society (TSD) is the first non-governmental organization active in the field of ceramics in our country. It has a unique structure that brings together the art, science (engineering) and industry section of ceramics. It has been organizing congresses, seminars, conferences, panels, exhibitions and similar meetings for economic, social, scientific, technical and artistic purposes for 34 years. It works to increase the interest in ceramics by introducing both industrial ceramic materials and ceramic art to the society. Especially the works carried out by the art section have provided TSD with an unrivaled position in the field of contemporary ceramic art.

All major events are realized with the support of sponsors. At this point, the intersection of the paths of TSD and Durma Sanat which wants to support the art of ceramics, enabled a long-established dream to come true and the International Ceramic Biennial to be realized.

International Bursa Ceramics Biennial, 2022

With its deep roots, the art of ceramics in Anatolia dating back 8,000 years has already deserved a ceramic biennial in Turkey. Every corner of our country is full of finds that keep the rich history of ceramics alive for thousands of years. On the other hand, today's artists follow all the contemporary developments in the world in the field of ceramics and create original works. Ceramics departments of Fine Arts faculties provide serious trainings and train important artists. The rich history carried by genetic codes, solid education and opportunities to follow the developments in the world carry our ceramic artists to a privileged place.

It is not a coincidence that the International Ceramics Biennial was born in Bursa and its first edition was held in this city. Legendary Ottoman tiles, a valuable ceramic type among Chinese porcelain, Italian majolica and European porcelain, were produced in Iznik, Bursa. The city which hosts UNESCO World Heritage sites and historical buildings, is one of the last stops and important centers of the Silk Road route in Anatolia, where cultural transfer was carried out along with trade for centuries. Today, the enthusiasm of Bursa, which is the center of sectors such as textile and automotive, for the revival of cultural life and the volunteers working on this issue should not be underestimated. The International Ceramic Biennial is one of the opportunities that feeds this enthusiasm and enables the city to meet with contemporary art. Both Bursa residents and art lovers who will come to Bursa from the surrounding cities for the Biennial can follow the traces of past cultures while breathing contemporary art.
